Moving On Deciding Where to Go
December 11th 2008 00:47
You have completed your lists of those things that you love about where you live and those things which create anxiety and uncertainty about where you live and now after careful consideration of the benefits and disadvantages you have decided to move on.
The next major issue that you have to deal with is deciding where to go. This is crucial for you to get right otherwise you may experience financial hardship if you make the wrong choice.
Do you want to stay in the same neighbour or would you prefer to move further afield? Perhaps you have family interstate and think that you would feel more secure if you lived in close proximity to them.
Once you have decided on the suburb, country town, regional centre or capital city where you want to live, it may be wise to visit the city or town if it is not familiar to you to get a feel for the neighbourhood.
Why not take a short break and go and stay in a motel or self contained apartment for a week or two to see if this is really where you want to spend your senior years. Getting it wrong now will have a significant impact on your future wellbeing both physically, mentally and financially.
Make sure the infastructure is what you are looking for. Are there shopping centres close by, are there good medical centres, hospitals, etc in the town. If not, are they within reasonable distance by car or public transport. Are their banks and/or credit unions available or will you need to travel to the neighbouring town to do your banking.
Whilst you are visiting the suburb or town of choice, check out the local real estate to make sure there is a good selection of the type of property you want to purchase or rent. Talk to locals to find out what they love about where they live and see if it fits well with you.
Perhaps it may be best if you rented out your present home and rented a house, villa, unit or apartment in the preferred suburb or town before buying. You may discover that six months on your initial impressions were not up to your expectations and you may want to move back to your present home.
As you can see, this is quite a complex step to take and making the right decisions are paramount to your ongoing happiness and peace of mind.
