Assisted Living – It is not as easy as you think

April 25th 2009 01:54
For those seniors who reside in Australia and find that their health prevents them from living unassisted, it will become necessary to source suitable accommodation which offers 24/7 care. For those of you living outside Australia it will be necessary for you to seek advice from your particular health and/or ageing authorities to find out what the procedure is for entry into residential aged care within your local area.

Before you or a family member or close friend start the task of sourcing accommodation that you believe is suitable, the initial step is to have an Aged Care Assessment carried out by an ACAT (Aged Care Assessment Team) member. This assessment is at no cost to you or your family and is essential to have completed prior to you or your family member being eligible for residential aged care accommodation.

The purpose of such an assessment is to determine whether you or your family member requires high care (nursing home), low care (hostel) or perhaps dementia specific care either in a nursing home or a hostel.

Such assessments can be organised by your local doctor or if you or your family member are currently in hospital, the social worker will arrange for the assessment to be carried out.

If you wish, you can arrange for an aged care assessment independently by contacting your local ACAT team. These teams are normally located within each area health service. An appointment will be arranged for someone to visit you or your family member at home or in hospital depending on your particular circumstances, in order to conduct the assessment.

At the meeting the ACAT member/s will ask you pertinent questions about your daily living activities and the type of assistance you require. They will also need to talk with you about your current state of health and any specific health conditions you may have. This information is necessary in order for them to determine the level of care you or your family member will need. If you agree, the ACAT member/s may discuss your medical history with your family doctor.

Once the meeting has concluded the ACAT member/s will explain the decisions they have made and will ask you to sign the document. If you are unable to sign the responsible person you have nominated will sign on your behalf. The document will be returned to you once it has been approved.

The assessment will outline the type of services the ACAT member/s have approved and what you are eligible to receive. Furthermore they will leave information with you explaining the services that may be available in your local area. It is important that you retain a copy of the assessment and any approval that has been granted for you to access services. You will be required to provide a copy of the assessment to any residential aged care home you approach regarding entry to their facility. If you find that you have not been approved for aged care services you will be advised of this decision by letter explaining how to appeal the recommendations.

If you currently reside in NSW, Australia or have elderly relatives or friends who do and you feel they could benefit from personalised assistance in accessing aged care services, then why not head over to our website at www.wheretonow.com.au to find out more about what we can offer.
