Laughter The Best Medicine For Getting Along with Others

March 8th 2010 22:38
It is a well known fact that laughter is the best medicine. It makes you feel less stressful, depressed and anxious which in turn can work towards your longevity. In addition research has proven that laughing can play a major part in warding off illnesses.

If you can share a joke or humourous moment with your fellow residents this will work wonders in establishing quality friendships. Just be careful that you laugh with someone rather than laugh at someone. When you are making fun of someone, it is only funny to one of you. On the other hand, if you are laughing together, you are on the same side. Laughing together is powerful when life throws you stuff that's not so funny.

Sometimes it may feel like you don't have a lot in common with other residents. Maybe you have different tastes and interests. When you are able to laugh together at something, suddenly you are sharing some common ground. No longer will you seem miles apart when you're enjoying the same quirky sense of humour.

It's hard to believe that laughter has any place in an argument, but if you find yourself in such a situation with another resident, cracking a funny joke can lighten the mood as well as giving you both the chance to step away from the heated discussion and regroup. Maybe you'll forget what you were squabbling about or at the very least find a way to work out the problem. Laughter can diffuse bombs.

Find a way to turn your big problems in life upside down by finding something funny in it. If you make it humourous in some way, the problem won't be as scary as it was. Whatever strikes you as funny - use it. It will change how you look at the problem and may help you think of a solution. It's hard to worry when you're laughing. So laugh loud and often to help you shake off your stress. Even when life as a resident in an aged care facility is not just to your liking at any given time, laughing will help make it seem not such a big issue.

Laughing is crucial for a healthy lifestyle, so take a moment to see if laughter is still there. If it is, you're on the right track. If not, you can take steps to add it back in. Perhaps start by watching a comedy show or a funny movie on your TV that will make you laugh. It's time to recharge those funny bones because laughter truly is the best medicine.
